han yuqin at the yi ngoi premier at this year's 66th's venice film festival

the cast of yi ngoi

han yuqin looked stunning on the red carpet of yi ngoi in italy this week. she subtly pinned her dior gown together with a diamond brooch, lessening the plunge of the deep v to very elegant effect. she cuts quite a fine figure next to her fellow actors, doesn't she? even with the high collar and long sleeves, i think she is the sexiest woman there.

carrie and mr big complete and leave their civil ceremony wedding in sex and the city (the movie)

67 year old manolo blahnik

manolo blahnik on the effect sex and the city (both the series and the movie) has had on him professionally and personally: "well, we had a very good year last year, thanks to those stupid satin shoes [which carrie wore at the end of the movie]. that shoe saved our company. (but) if people talk to me about sex and the city, i get sick. the taxi drivers recognise me now. it becomes too much and i don't feel comfortable. i have never wanted to be a celebrity designer."

heidi on karl

"women relate to ivana because she suffered. if she is over the top with her wardrobe, or the things she says, it is forgiven because she has been beaten down and she has risen to the top. america loves an underdog.”
- cindy adams, page six columnist

heidi klum on karl lagerfeld's comments that he'd never heard of her and didn't know who she was: “i don’t know why [karl] said that. maybe he wanted to be in the paper? maybe he doesn’t understand what i do? it’s bizarre to me that he says he doesn’t know who i am because he’s dressed me in the past. i’ve worn karl lagerfeld. not even chanel — his line. lagerfeld doesn’t just send random things everywhere, so it was a big thing for me [to wear his label] to the cfda awards a few years ago. i don’t know how he missed that, when he dressed me that time. but, you know, it’s cool. people can say whatever they want to say. you can’t please everybody, and you can’t live your life wanting to please everybody either.” get the full page six interview online this friday.

fat is back

"i don't want all those girls with pale skin who look the same. my family is italian - i am inspired by a womanly aesthetic."
- antonio berardi

it is no secret that the global economic meltdown has had a profound impact on the fashion industry over this last year but now it is unleashing its fury and wrath on the model front. earlier this month, naomi campbell voiced to the sunday telegraph, "this year, we have gone back all the way that we had advanced. i don't see any black woman, or of any other race, in big advertising campaigns." top agencies and designers are also revealing that the runway shift is towards a curvier, more "girl-next-door" and, therefore, accessible (ie. commercial) look. "when the economy is booming, we experiment a little more with complicated looks and extravagant makeup and hairstyles," ivan bart, senior vice president at img models, told the wall street journal. "now the key for advertisers is to bring people into the store." with fashion "month" commencing on thursday, the proof will be in the pudding. watch this space.

your very own tube seats

"we are now travelling through baker street. as you can see baker street is closed. it would have been nice if they had actually told me, so I could tell you earlier, but no, they don't think about things like that."
- announcement once made to passengers by london underground train driver

fancy a go at redesigning the tube seats? well, here's your chance. transport for london and london underground have just launched a competition, open to both professional as well as non-professional designers, to create a print for the new fabric or "moquette". the winning design will first launch on the piccadilly line in 2012 and gradually roll-out across the entire system after that, to be seen by over three million users every day. entrants may submit up to two textile designs using colours that respond well to both natural and artificial light, with a pattern that takes into consideration wear and tear. the winner will receive a design fee of gbp5,000 which includes copyright purchase. with a closing date of next monday (17:00 gmt), you'll really have to get cracking.

review, reuse and recycle

"does a string of bad dates really equal one good one?"
- carrie bradshaw in episode 47 "what goes around comes around" of sex and the city, season 3

if patricia field thinks it's ok to recycle carrie's newspaper dress from season 3 of the hbo series, then so do we!! the look is updated with christian louboutin fw09 lace open toe ankle strap booties. what a creative method to create a bond between the character and the audience: in this way, carrie becomes a a real person with a real wardrobe who wears her clothes more than once!! take note, girls - pair your long lost vintage pieces with some fantastic new shoes.

last season's balmain

"reporter: i like that. what's your name?
[pointing tape recorder at phoebe]
phoebe: phoebe. that's 'p' as in 'phoebe', 'h' as in 'hoebe', 'o' as in 'oebe', 'e' as in 'ebe', 'b' as in 'bebe' and 'e' as in 'ello there mate.'"
- friends

theoutnet's balmain sale (up to 60% off)

last season's leftovers vs this season's high street. hmm. just because paris can afford the original, doesn't mean she can't rock the usd179 version. you know what to do.

woman beats man in singapore

canto typing

"you might be saying, 'i love you' to your girlfriend in cantonese, but it will still sound like you're fighting. it's just our tone. we always sound like we're in a shouting match. mandarin is so mellow. cantonese is strong and edgy."
- howard lee

for those of you who, like me, have minimal cantonese reading/writing capabilities, online cantonese is perfect. "ngor oi lei" instantly becomes "我愛你".

don't close down my chicken, please

korean supermarket in seoul, e-mart

pierce chicken (which is actually baked, not fried) take-out from 360 at the landmark

after being tempted time after time by the deep fried goodness in the aisles of e-mart last week, i couldn't wait to get home and eat me some pierce chicken. yesterday evening, much to my dismay, i found that this had been removed from soho delivery's restaurant list and, after driving by, that the staunton street store was closed. upon calling, i was notified that the lan kwai fong location had also been shut down and that they were only operating out of 360 now. phew!! dinner didn't end up happening till 21:00 but at least i got my chicken.

g bar permits smoking

"we have to remove ashtrays, but honestly, if we find customers smoking, we can't do much as business has already been very bad. we can't stop them smoking and drive them out of there. we won't do anything. we don't want to annoy smoking customers, especially those drunken ones, who might react very unexpectedly."
- chin chun-wing, vice-chairman of the bar and club association, a group which represents about 200 bars in the city speaks to the south china morning post (28 june 2009)

despite much uproar by the entertainment/f&b industries earlier this year, the hong kong government decided to proceed with its complete ban of indoor smoking on 1 july after a two year grace period. the press have documented many cases where this new law has been blatantly ignored - and was stunned out of my seat when i personally discovered that g bar in ifc was one such establishment. upon inquiry to the manager, i was politely informed that g bar's vips are indeed permitted the indulgence (the guy in the background of the second photograph is smoking a cigar) and perhaps if i was uncomfortable i could sit outside (on the public property terrace). SERIOUSLY??!!
