conde nast continues with cuts

"it is a big market.  even if it is a crowded market, conde nast hasn't really shied away from that."
- conde nast

wwd reported yesterday that cuts were to continue over at conde nast this week as 2010 budgets need to be met.  the most recent round would bring the combined total thus far to 250 laid off employees.  it is believed that ellen seidman, maryellen gordon and paul kramer were amongst those asked to leave glamour on monday.  candy pratts price's contract with style.com was not renewed.  lucy danziger, editor in chief of self, gave up her car service for a year, effective immediately, in order to avoid reductions although a reduced work week is now assigned to certain staff and attritted positions have not been replaced.

heidi on karl

"women relate to ivana because she suffered. if she is over the top with her wardrobe, or the things she says, it is forgiven because she has been beaten down and she has risen to the top. america loves an underdog.”
- cindy adams, page six columnist

heidi klum on karl lagerfeld's comments that he'd never heard of her and didn't know who she was: “i don’t know why [karl] said that. maybe he wanted to be in the paper? maybe he doesn’t understand what i do? it’s bizarre to me that he says he doesn’t know who i am because he’s dressed me in the past. i’ve worn karl lagerfeld. not even chanel — his line. lagerfeld doesn’t just send random things everywhere, so it was a big thing for me [to wear his label] to the cfda awards a few years ago. i don’t know how he missed that, when he dressed me that time. but, you know, it’s cool. people can say whatever they want to say. you can’t please everybody, and you can’t live your life wanting to please everybody either.” get the full page six interview online this friday.

pop it like it's hot

"i read fashion magazines, but i'm not all up in the mix. i'm not from this world. i haven't spent years in fashion making friends and making enemies. i barely know who half the people are. obviously, i know that katie grand started pop, and that it's a product that's so associated with her in this world. but in my world, it's just pop."
- dasha zhukova

dasha zhukova has put 13-year-old fashion blogger tavi in artwork by damien hirst on the first cover of her new magazine, POP, affirming her desire to meld the fashion and art worlds with this new venture. featured inside are a 25-year retrospective on naomi campbell, stem cell research with rodarte and a lady margaret thatcher profile but nothing of whether or not the the rumors that the editor in chief is pregnant by her billionaire boyfriend are true. on news stands 1 september.

writing's on the wall

“she is like an historical figure that walks amongst us. i always explain her this way: you can make a film without steven spielberg’s blessing, you can produce some software without bill gates’ blessing, but you can’t get into fashion without anna wintour’s blessing."

"i'd just been on a trip to minnesota, where i can only kindly describe most of the people i saw as little houses.... there is such an epidemic of obesity in the united states, and for some reason, everybody focuses on anorexia."

get ready for the pr machine that is miss watson. all grown up, 19 year old emma has chosen to begin at columbia university in the fall where she is hoping for a little more anonymity than london. in the meantime however, the rounds for harry potter and the half-blood prince due to release globally this summer must be attended to. she looks pretty gooood - especially at elle uk. not much hope of fading into the background on any of these covers.

come on, vogue

"when i die, i want to go to vogue."
- david bailey

elle beat vogue [gasp] in the first half of this year, having sold a total of 14 more advertising pages in its past six issues according to forbes. what with the the economy flummoxed and all, ad sales for everyone are down but elle is at -22% (970 pages sold) compared with vogue's -32% (956 pages sold). forbes notes that vogue's blake lively and sienna miller covergirl choices have been somewhat "down-market" [GASP] of late and hence possible signs that it is slipping from its revered top spot. too c.o.m.m.e.r.c.i.a.l....? nothing wrong with a little commercial.
